A worked handoff: from inconsistent source to a usable dashboard
Imagine monthly order files where Customer Name contains inconsistent spaces, Order Date arrives as text, and one file calls a field Sales while another calls it Revenue.
In Prep, bring the files into an input union only after checking that the fields describe the same concept.
Add a Clean step. Trim or group inconsistent customer values, convert Order Date to the correct date type, and rename or merge the sales fields only after verifying they mean the same measure.
Review the profile and row-level data. If converting dates created nulls, stop and resolve the source pattern rather than hiding the error.
Output the cleaned data source, then open it in Desktop.
In Desktop, create a monthly sales view, filter to a customer segment, and inspect whether row counts and totals make sense before publishing a dashboard.
The lesson is specific: Prep fixes the shape and consistency of the source; Desktop tests and communicates the analysis. If you create a beautiful dashboard from a duplicated join, Desktop did not rescue the data. Give Prep focused time when you hesitate over joins, unions, pivoting, data types, nulls, or the order of transformations. Give Desktop focused time when you hesitate over calculations, level of detail, visual choice, filters, dashboards, or explaining a result. Alternate them using one data set: clean a small source in Prep, then answer two specific questions in Desktop. That creates a concrete feedback loop instead of two disconnected tutorials.
The common mistake is treating every data issue as a calculated-field issue. A calculation cannot responsibly compensate for an unexamined many-to-many join, a date parsing failure, or inconsistent category labels. Another mistake is treating Prep as a one-time cleanup utility. Reusable, documented flows make changes inspectable; undocumented manual fixes inside a workbook are harder for a team to reproduce.
